Romans 3
May 12, 2020
Welcome back to Bible Study. Today we’re on the third chapter of Romans. Yes, we’re walking through this one slowly too. I’m so glad you’re here to do this with me. Enjoy yourself as we meander through this one.
Let’s Pray:
Lord Jesus, this book is so wonderful. Even when it’s talking about wrongdoing it gets back to right-doing fast. It feels like every sentence is valuable. Every sentence is worth stopping to understand. Yet You know what You specifically want us to see, so I ask You, have our hands ready to mark them. Have our ears ready to hear them and have our eyes see them as You want us to see them. I want to grow, Lord. I want to be better after this lesson than I am as we start. I want to understand something new, Lord. We all do. So we ask in Your name. Amen.
Romans 3 NIV
God’s Faithfulness
Read Verses 1-4
The advantage being stated for being a Jew is that they were ________________ with the very words of God.
Does it matter if some were faithful or unfaithful? ___________
Jude verse 3
Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.
Read Romans 3:5-8
The false argument here, the human wisdom is that we should sin more to bring to light how pure and holy and right God is. What is the judgment for doing that? __________________________
If you’re reading the NIV, the subheading right here would be No One Righteous. The one in The Message, is “We’re All in the Same Stinking Boat.” Somehow that’s a whole lot more visual.
Read Romans 3:9-20
As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;”
Romans 3:10
No one ____________
No one _________ _______
All have ___________ _________,
There is no one who _______ _______, not even one.
“Their mouths are full of ____________ and ________________.”
“Their feet are swift to _________ __________.”
“The way of peace they do not know.”
Romans 3:17
“There is no ______ of God before their __________.”
No one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the ______; rather through the _______ we become conscious of our _______.
But there is a way. One way. Read on.
Righteousness Through Faith
Read verses 21-22
This righteousness is ______ through ________ in ________ ________ to ______ who believe.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
and all are justified freely by his grace
through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
Romans 3:23-24
Read Romans 3:25-26
God presented Christ as a _____________ of ____________ … —to be ________________ by ________.
Read Romans 3:27-31
The law that requires faith… we’re getting to that in several chapters but just let me give you a preview now…
Romans 8:1-2 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
That is the law that requires faith. The law of the Spirit.
There is only one God who will justify all of us, Jew and Gentile alike by what? _____________.
You’ve got to contend for the faith that was entrusted to you. (Jude 3)
See why faith is so important? Let His words percolate in your mind and get down in your heart so that you know that you know at least a few rock solid verses that will lift your heart and excite the Spirit inside of you. Do you know how I know that I know? I can write Romans 8:1-2 from memory, I don’t have to look it up. I know what it says. I believe it. It’s way down deep in my memory and working its way down into my soul which I can feel get very excited when I study like this.
We’ve reached the end of chapter 3. Next week we’ll do chapter 4. Before we go, though, let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, we thank You for this astonishing book. The more we see the more astonished we are. Help us, grow our faith, make Your words stay in our minds and fill us with hope and encouragement. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
