Yay! It’s Tuesday! So, so happy to be here with you to study John 2. This chapter is nearly half as long as the first one, but so chock full of wonder. So let’s pray then get started.
Lord Jesus, this book is more special than I can even fully understand. So I ask You to lead, to reveal, to show us what we need to see today. All for Your glory. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
If you want to follow along in your own Bible, just know that I’m using the NIV for this one unless I tell you otherwise. Get something to write with and on and join me in John 2.
Read John 2:1-2
The clues that this chapter will be different come before you even start with verse 1. What is the subtitle of chapter 2? (Write it or underline it in your Bible)
On the third day: I’m pretty sure this day is a third day. Because they count the days different. Tuesday is the third day. Is that not just a perfect day for Bible Study? The whole point of Bible Study is to grow your relationship with Jesus.
A wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Why was Jesus there?
When is the last time You invited Jesus anywhere?
Read John 2:3-5
What command did Jesus’ mother give the servants?
Look at that order. You wrote it, right? “Do whatever He tells you.” It’s like she was revealing obedience is how to respond. Obedience reveals love for Him in you.
Love incarnate is standing there and his mother says “Do whatever he tells you.” What has He told you?
Read John 2:6-7
Can you picture 20-30 gallons, 75-115 liters? Containers that hold that much each? Six of them. So 6 times 20 or 30. 120 to 180 gallons total.
What kind of jars are these, what are they used for?
What did Jesus command?
How did they respond?
What does 6 denote?
Read John 2:8a
What kind of spigot do you think these containers have? They’re meant to wash feet. Or do you think they dip something in the top to ‘draw’ some out? Surely they don’t pour like we do our much smaller volumed containers? Or maybe they do? What do you think?
Read John 2:8b-10
The last thing the master of the banquet says to the bridegroom is what?
Jesus perfected the water jars and in doing so foreshadowed what He would ultimately do for us.
Read John 2:11
John calls this a sign. Glory revealed. Belief is the response. Glory is always a sign. To the praise of His glorious grace.

Where did they stay for a few days? What holiday is mentioned in verse 13?

Where was all the selling happening?
What else was happening there?
Read John 2:15-16
The fact that Jesus first made a whip out of cords, what does that mean to you?
Shepherds drive sheep and cattle. Do you think that word means Jesus is acting out of anger? Or do you think what He’s doing here is acting out of his shepherd-ness?
What kind of effort is involved in scattering coins? Hardly any.
Do you think He was even gentler with the doves?
Who do you think He directed His command, the second part of that quote? I can see Him turn His head to encompass the crowd before he says “Stop..” What do you see?
Read John 2:17
Look up Psalm 69:9. It is written…
Read John 2:18
They’re asking the Word himself to prove his authority.
Read John 2:19-21
Matthew 11:15 “Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
Isn’t it sad that they don’t listen with their hearts? They obviously misunderstood. Though it’s hard to imagine what it was like before we know who He really is.
Read John 2:22
Do you know the Scriptures well enough to believe what He says? He quotes them often. Do those words come to mind at all?
