Yippee Eye Yay, it’s Tuesday! Bible Study day. Oh how I love Bible Study. This is the one day a week when I know what will be posted way ahead of time. Not that it’s ready then, just that I know what to do. The rest, well, most, not all, are given in the moment rather than ahead like these. Pre-planned Praise. That’s what it feels like and oh the joy that it always brings.
Last week I told you we would skip verse 53 in John 7 because it’s part of the first sentence in John 8. So technically we’re starting today in John 7:53. But here, if you don’t have an NIV Bible, click here and you’ll know what I’m referencing throughout this chapter.
Lord Jesus, thank you for this chapter, this lesson, these words. I ask You to lead and to reveal all that You want us to see and know. All for Your glory. Amen.
To begin, here is John 7:53 with John 8:1
Then they all went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
Read John 8:2
He spent the night at the Mount of Olives and at dawn where did he go?
Can you imagine, it’s very, very early in the day and He’s there, how many others do you think were? What does ‘all’ mean to you?
Read John 8:3-6
Focus on that last sentence.
Imagine Jesus kneeling down and writing with His finger in the sand. Do you know what else His finger has ‘written’? Do you remember the stone tablets?
Read John 8:7-8
In light of those two verses, what could Jesus be writing?
What else can we learn from Jesus’ statement here?
“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone…” In other words, no one should throw any stones. Not one is without sin. Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Praise the Lord Jesus who died for our sins and freed us and reconnected us to the Father. Never forget the only way to be free from sin is Him and what He’s done for us.
Read John 8:9-11
Bless the Lord Jesus. What exactly did He declare in verse 11?
Read John 8:12
Dispute Over Jesus’ Testimony
Though the ones accusing the woman left, many others remained and not all of them were faith-filled.
Who does Jesus say He is in verse 12?
What does He say will happen to those who follow him?
You will never walk in darkness but have the Light of Life.
It’s been in many of the things I’ve read lately, what the darkness is or is indicative of and what it means – separation from God, evil, sons of darkness – all in Ephesians 2 and a story from a book’s author I read this week, terrifying. So grateful for the Kingdom. So grateful for the Spirit, and all Jesus has done and continues to do for me.
The Light is real. And He will abide in you if you abide in Him and yes, it’s visible light, a visible glow you can feel that He provides.
What was the subtitle at verse 12? The verb being….
Read John 8:13-18
Verse 15 He proved in the story at the beginning of this chapter. But it’s not an eternity decision, it’s only applicable until He returns. When He does, He will gather those who are His and You don’t want to miss that. You will see it one way or another, His or not, just be certain You are His so you will get in on the beyond imagination future He has for those who love Him.
Obviously the Father is invisible to our human eyes. But they had the Scriptures, being Pharisees they should know all the Scriptures and yet, they missed God. They missed the forest for the trees. All of Scripture is about Jesus who is God’s Son, God Himself. You can’t get one without the other. He said He does what in verse 17b?
In verse 18 who is Jesus’ other witness?
God, the Father, seen most often in the Scriptures, but also we can see what He’s done in nature. The vinedresser, the gardener. Jesus describes Him that way in John 15. Faith, my friends, it’s so critical. You have to have faith to be among His ekklesia.
Read John 8:19-20
I was reading this in one of my study Bibles the other day and do you know where the offering receptacles were located? In what was called the “Women’s Court”. Outside the temple but on temple grounds.
When Jesus said “If you knew me,…” Do you think He raised His voice just a little, focused his eyes on the crowd there in the court rather than those who asked the question?
Read John 8:21-24
Dispute Over Who Jesus Is
Verse 24. So explicit. When I was reading this I saw this verse move, “believe that I am he” lifted, and the rest went down. He, the Son of God. He the author and perfecter (Hebrews 12:2 AMP) of our faith. He the Light of the world (John 8:12). He the bread of life (John 6:36) and Truth and Way and Life (John 14:6) and Vine (John 15:1&5) and Savior (Luke 2:11) and Friend (Luke 12:4) and Hope (Romans 5:1-5 & 8:25) of the world and always, always, always, Emmanuel, God with us (Isaiah 7:14). And so very much more.
Believe that He is who He says He is.
Read John 8:25-30
Jesus said “He who sent me is ________________” and “the one who sent me is _________________… for I always do _________________________.”
Write verse 30. Even as….
Read John 8:31-32
Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are
To those that believe in him, Jesus said “_____”
Read John 8:33-36
This chapter is so faith requesting. Can you imagine how much Jesus loves these people and is doing all He’s doing to convince them His word is true. May we all be among those who really believe.
Read John 8:37-38
There’s a difference between descendants and sons/daughters. We can see this in our lives too. Jesus says He is telling them what?
Read John 8:39-41a
“If you were Abraham’s children, then you ______”
Read John 8:41b-43
“If God were your Father, you_______”
Jesus asked a question and answered it himself. Or God answered it and He heard it right after he asked it.
Read John 8:44-47
Jesus says He’s telling the _______. Verse 47 write the first sentence.
Read John 8:48-51
Jesus’ Claims About Himself
Glory. Oh the glory that we will see. So long as we live here we can bring Him glory. Every day. It’s not complicated. Praise Him, Thank Him, Worship, Obey and Adore Him. Glory is in all of it, for Him. Write verse 51.
Read John 8:52-56
“My Father is the one who ______________-“ “but I do know him and _______________.”
Read John 8:57-58
“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
Oh can you feel the power? He flat out stated He is God when He did that and they were instantly angry.
Faith, my friends, your faith in Him is critical and important and I just want to say, hold onto it, keep it, grow it, it’s your assurance that hope will not disappoint us because the love of God has has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. (Romans 5:5) by faith in Jesus Christ.
