Happy Tuesday! It’s Bible Study day! We’re in John 12 today. Come, join me as we go through it.
First, let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, thank You for this book. Thank You for this study listening directly to and for your word to us. Thank You for this time for me to write and us to read. Thank You for each and every person You have reading this with us. All of this, Lord, every word is for You. In Your holy name, I pray. Amen.
We’re in the NIV so if you have one, grab it. If not, here is John 12 in the NIV, and you might need something to write with, and something to write upon too. Maybe even a highlighter if you’d rather highlight than underline.
Begin by reading John 12:1-2
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
Time stamp: ____
Why did Jesus go back to Bethany? It’s in Judea and we know from previous chapters he was in danger there. Love is why, I expect. Sure, dinner was served, but my guess is He went because He loved them.
Read John 12:3
From Wikipedia:
Spikenard, also called nard, nardin, and muskroot, is a class of aromatic amber-colored essential oil derived from Nardostachys jatamansi, a flowering plant in the honeysuckle family which grows in the Himalayas of Nepal, China, and India. The oil has been used over centuries as a perfume, a traditional medicine, or in religious ceremonies across a wide territory from India to Europe.
Imagine it’s a perfume oil, what did Mary do with it?
Read John 12:4-6
Those wages Judas referred to according to the footnotes are three hundred denarii.
Don’t you love how John adds explainer sentences in his book?
Read John 12:7-8
Jesus the rescuer. It’s not in John, but in the other gospels, there is more to this story. Still, here we can see Jesus come to Mary’s defense.
Do you know He comes to yours too? He loves You. He will ultimately rescue every one in His ekklesia, everyone who knows Him.
I hesitate to add a song right here for fear you’ll forget to finish the study, but right here is one and He said, “put it here.” So turn up the volume and praise with Rend Collective. Then come back and continue the study.
Read John 12:9-11
It’s hard not to get discouraged at that first sentence. But hold on, look at verse 11 and write that verse (or highlight it).
For on account of Jesus, and his resurrection of Lazarus, many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in Him.
Read John 12:12-15
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
The next day, who heard what in verse 12?
There’s a Christmas song I listened to many many times this past Christmas that the chorus goes
Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna,
Hosanna, King Jesus, Hosanna, All Praise,
Hosannah, Come Save us, Hosannah, He Reigns.
It’s Chris Tomlin’s All the World Awaits (Hosannah) Totally worth listening. It’s all Praise. If you watch that video, after the song Chris will explain what Hosanna means. It means so much. Both come save us and all praise.
Read John 12:16-18
I simply love how John explains what is going on so we can more easily picture how this all goes.
The crowd that was with him when he raised Lazarus from the tomb continued to do what?
Many others came because they had heard what?
Read John 12:19
Nothing like exaggeration, ‘the whole world’ unlikely.

Jesus Predicts His Death
What did those Greeks want?
Read John 12:23-28
Glory. What Jesus is saying He is going to do will bring Glory to God and lead to His glorification too. I’m sure it was hard to hear Him say these things. But what is it that spoke to you?
Read John 12:29-33
What will Jesus do?
Read John 12:34-36
Write the first sentence of verse 36 leaving out ‘while you have the light’
Read John 12:37-41
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
Fulfilled Scripture. That’s what that is. It doesn’t hurt less to know it, but it’s written to help us understand their refusal to believe.
Read John 12:42-43
Many believed but would not openly acknowledge it, why? There are two reasons listed.
Read John 12:44-46
One who believes will live in _____________. His light reflects on us and makes us light too.
Read John 12:47-48
He came to save. Believe He is who He says He is. What He says will happen. “There is a judge for the one who rejects…the words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day.” That day is coming. It’s nearer now than ever before. Believe. Trust in Him. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus Christ. Run to Him.
Read John 12:49-50
Jesus spoke all He was commanded to say and all that He said, leads to eternal life. To save, that’s why He came. To bring us back to God. Praise His holy name.
