Grace and peace to you from God our Father and our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Ten verses, today is only ten. So glad you’re here to study with me. You’ll see, we’re not doing the whole chapter today as the end is more chapter six than it is chapter five. So today, is about our glorious high priest. Join me in Hebrews 5, I read the NIV so any and all questions will come from that, but you may see some AMP in here too. Both can be found at biblegateway.com. Grab some paper and something to write with just in case they’re needed today. God may ask you to write something. Listen while you study.
Before we start, let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, we’re here to bring You glory. So lead us as we study these ten very much about You verses. Only You can reveal what we need to see. So help, write this lesson, Lord. Thank You.
Here we go. Read Hebrews 5:1-4
You’ve been called too.
Ephesians 1:4 AMP
just as [in His love] He chose us in Christ [actually selected us for Himself as His own] before the foundation of the world, so that we would be holy [that is, consecrated, set apart for Him, purpose-driven] and blameless in His sight.
Thank You, Father.
Ephesians 4:1-4 AMP
So I, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to you to live a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called [that is, to live a life that exhibits godly character, moral courage, personal integrity, and mature behavior—a life that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation], with all humility [forsaking self-righteousness], and gentleness [maintaining self-control], with patience, bearing with one another in [unselfish] love. Make every effort to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the bond of peace [each individual working together to make the whole successful].
1 Peter 1:9 AMP
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Thank You, Jesus.
Every verse calls another to mind, it’s taking all kinds of restraint to not keep going here with words from a different chapter. Where would you go for the next one? More Ephesians or Romans? Or 2nd Peter? Oh so many places. Don’t let me keep you from them, just know they won’t be in this study. This one is Him centered.
Read Hebrews 5:5-6
Both of those are Psalm references. How well do you know the psalms?
Do you remember where Melchizedek is mentioned other than that psalm? Genesis 14, but this writer will talk more about him later.
Jesus, our forever high priest who can sympathize with our plight as he became one of us to understand it yet was without sin. Making salvation available for all who believe. Jesus, our Savior, our Friend, our only Way to Eternal Life.
Read Hebrews 5:7-10
Reverent submission. Worshipful submission. That’s the kind of submission we are all called to.
Suffering is not for nothing. Learn through it.
Here are verses 9 and 10 in the AMP
And having been made perfect [uniquely equipped and prepared as Savior and retaining His integrity amid opposition], He became the source of eternal salvation [an eternal inheritance] to all those who obey Him, being designated by God as High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Obey. Trust and Obey. Listen to know how. Train yourself how to hear Him. Read, read, read so you’ll recognize it when He does.
With verse 11, we’ll move to chapter 6 because it goes with six not really five. So if you’re reading along and wonder why we stopped at verse 10, that is why. Verse 11-14 will be in next week’s study. But while you await that, think on this verse, it is technically the last verse of this chapter. Verse 14 says, “… who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Constant use. Do not neglect the Word of God. Read. Learn. Study.
