Happy, happy, happy Tuesday! It’s the next Bible Study day and we’re moving through John at what seams to me like a very quick pace. Today, John 16.
I read the NIV so if you have one, grab it. Pick up something to write with and something to write on and a highlighter if you have the NIV. If you don’t, go here in another tab or window.
Let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, thank You for more of your words. Thank You for this time and this study. Thank You for providing all we need to see in this chapter and all of these chapters. Thank You for this word, from Peter because living like You needs the
encouragement. So, take our faith and help us make every effort to add to it goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if we possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of You, Lord Jesus Christ. All for your glory. Amen.
Read John 16:1-3
All these words Jesus said so that you will ________________. He knows they will be put out of the synagogue. If fact, He says, they will do so because they think they are __________________. They do such things because they have not known _______________________.
Read John 16:4-6
Can you feel their grief? I am so grateful that He told them ahead of time. This way when it happens they won’t be so shocked about it. When He tells them He’s going away, He’s giving them time and the encouragement to really pay attention while He’s still there.
Read John 16:7-11
Why does He say it’s for their own good that He’s going?
What will the Advocate do when He comes?
prove the world wrong about _____________ why? Wrong about ________ because He is going to the Father, where __________; and wrong about ______________ because _____________________________________________________.
Very truly He told them. Very truly indeed.
Read John 16:12-15
Jesus can’t say more because they can not _____________, so He said the Spirit of truth will ___________________________. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he _______, and he will tell you ______________________________. The Spirit will glorify _________ because it is from ______ that he will receive what he will make known to you. Now he makes an authority statement. Write verse 15, but replace the ‘mine’ with Jesus’. And the ‘I’ to Jesus. Then read it out loud.
Read John 16:16-18
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
Can you imagine their confusion?
Read John 16:19-24
You will weep and mourn while the world __________
You will grieve but your grief will turn to _________
Now is your time of grief, but I will _____________, and you will ____________, and no one will take away your __________.
In that day ___________________________.
Very truly I tell you, _______________________________. Until now you have not ___________. Ask and you will ____________, and your _______________________________.
Joy promised, Joy given, Joy all over.
Read John 16:25-28
“The Father himself ____________ because you have ____________ and have _______________________. I came from the _________ and entered ____________; now I am leaving the ________ and going back to __________.”
Read John 16:29-33
Why did He tell them all these things?
Yes, it is Joy and Peace. Trouble is promised but take heart! He is Peace. He has overcome__________.
All glory, Lord, is Yours. Let the Spirit within us praise Your name. Thank You for never leaving us alone. In Your holy and precious name, I pray.
Amen.
