Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, The Light Has Come and it’s Tuesday again. I’m so glad you’re here to go through John 5 with me. There are such wonders in this chapter too. Come on, let’s get right to it.
Let’s pray
Lord Jesus, please, lead us as we study today. Thank You for these words and the way you’re consistently leading us closer to You. Amen.
This one is all in the NIV too. So if you don’t have one, go here.
Get something to write on and with and you’ll be ready.
Read John 5:1-4
The Healing at the Pool
The NIV omits the story of the angel stirring the water, chances are you have a version that includes it but here you’d have to go to the footnotes to see it. Verse 4 is a footnote.
Where is Jesus headed? What is near the gate? Can you picture the pool? Now add all those physically disabled people. What a sorry sight this must have been.
Let’s read verses 5-6 now.
How do you suppose Jesus learned that he had been in this condition for a long time?
What do you think He saw in this one to ask him a question when this is the only one He spoke to?
What question did Jesus ask him?
Did you respond to that question yourself? How long has it been since you last did? I asked today. No, I’m not sick, but I have difficulties with relationships that need his healing. I think you do too.
Read John 5:7-8
Don’t miss this. What did Jesus do?
Read John 5:9
How soon was the Word answered?
How do you think he knew he was healed so he could get up?
What day of the week was it?
Read John 5:10
Rules. Do you think the leaders are looking for rule breakers?
Do you know what the laws were for?
What did they say the law did about this?
Read John 5:11-13
What did Jesus do?
Read John 5:14-15
Jesus gave this man a warning. Apparently this one was healed physically but not spiritually, based on the man’s response in verse 15.
Read John 5:16-18
The Authority of the Son
Because He was doing these things they began to __________ him. But because He called God his Father, they tried to ______________.
Calling God his own Father, making himself ____________.
Read John 5:19-20
Did you notice the subheading for this section? Jesus is continuing to talk here.
Can you remember some of what Jesus has already done in John’s gospel? So far, he’s healed a lot of people with a word. Do you remember any of the signs?
(Write out the signs or the miracles you can remember.)
Jesus said the Father will show him even greater works than these, so that you __________________.
Read John 5:21
Wow! Can you imagine how those listening would respond to this?
“The Son gives life to whom he is __________________________.”
How does that make you feel?
Read John 5:22-23
What has the Father entrusted to the son?
Why?
If one doesn’t honor the Son, he doesn’t honor _______________.
Read John 5:24-27
Three times so far, Jesus has said “Very ________ I tell you.” The promise in verse 24, just sit there for a minute.
To not be judged but to cross over from death to life you must ____ and _______ his word.
In verse 25, it really helps to have read other Scriptures, but if you haven’t, in Ephesians 2, we read this:
Ephesians 2:1-5
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
When Jesus says “A time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live” Those who hear? We’ve been made alive like it says in Ephesians 2 and before that? Nope. Cannot hear. You must be made alive first.
Now we can go back and see that Jesus was pleased to give us life if in fact we can hear in verse 21.
The Father has granted the Son to have __________ in himself and has given Him ____________ to ________.
Read John 5:28-30
“But don’t be amazed at this,” Jesus said, “a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out.” This is the physically dead now, the ones above, spiritually dead. But while you are physically living, this is the only chance you have to be among those ‘who have done what is good’ what is good? Faith. Relationship.
Who do you seek to please?

Testimonies About Jesus
There is not one that Jesus doesn’t want to save. All have the chance. John 6, it’s in John 6, we’ll see it next week but here’s a preview…John 6:37 MSG
Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go.
In verse 34, Jesus is telling them he wants them to be saved too. He wants all of us to be saved. But not all of us will be. We have the decision to make.
Read John 5:35
‘You chose for a time to enjoy his light.’ It’s totally different than ‘you are light.’ Only God can send people to Jesus, and when He does that, Jesus holds on, thereby making all those light with Him. For He is Light and Life and so much more.
Read John 5:36-38
Jesus’ works prove what?________________________.
Does His word dwell in you? Do you believe?
Read John 5:39-40

What do they not see?
What do they refuse?

Read John 5:41-44
They do not have ______________________________
He came in whose name? _______________________
They do not ________________ him.

Seeking glory. Do you suppose that means seeking the Father’s glory? Not for ourselves, but to bring him more? Yet it is Scriptural that we will get glory too.
Read John 5:45-47
Who is their accuser? ___________________________.
