Romans 8
We reached the mid point of Romans. And it’s full of rock solid truth and verses to memorize for a lifetime. You can find wonderful things on this chapter alone on YouTube. But we’re going to go through it here and be sure we’re familiar enough to know when we’re hearing the eighth chapter of Romans.
Let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, this chapter, this one, is probably the only one in the entire book that receives the most conversation and illustration. It doesn’t discount the others, every one of them is wonderful, but You’ve put this one here to show us something wonderful. I thank You for providing it. I thank You for leading us. I thank You for every single word You’re going to use to warm our hearts and increase our faith. I love you, Lord. Come, lead. Amen.
These first two verses are a sentence and the first one is incomplete without the second. So read Romans 8:1-2 then pause and repeat it out loud.
Life Through the Spirit
Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life,
has set me free from the law of sin and death.
That is a post-it-on-your-mirror set of verses right there. In my memory work on Romans 1, 5 and 8, I have only reached verse 2 in 8 because those two verses have such power it’s taking months of thought to get further, then again, why would I even need to? The whole point is in those two verses. We should be saying those two verses to ourselves every day, many times a day. It’s another way to transform your thoughts. Later today, repeat those two verses to yourself and watch how you feel the rest of this day. First let’s get to the rest of this lesson.
Romans 8:3-4 in the Message
3-4 God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn’t deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that.
The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.
Embrace what the Spirit is doing in us. So perfectly stated for the Tuesday after Trinity Sunday, Jesus knows exactly what He’s doing when He writes with me for these.
Read Romans 8:5-8 NIV
Those who live according to the _______ have their minds set on what the ______ desires; but those who live in accordance with the ________ have their minds set on what the ________ desires. The mind governed by the _______ is death, but the mind governed by the ________ is life and peace. The mind governed by the _______ is hostile to God; it does not _________ to God’s law, nor ____ ___ ___ ___. Those who are in the realm of the _______ cannot please God.
The differences between flesh and spirit; and did you catch it? There is a realm of the flesh. The Spirit is in The Kingdom. There is a huge difference. The realm of flesh cannot please God. God, the Spirit, within You by faith in Christ is the only way, faith is the only thing that pleases God. “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” from Hebrews 11:6
Romans 8:9-11 NIV
You, however, are not in the _______ of the ______ but are in the ______ of the Spirit, ____ __________ the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does ______ have the Spirit of __________, they ____ _______ belong to ________. But if ________ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
And if the _______ of him who raised Jesus from the _______ is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also _______ ______ to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
If Christ is in you, the Spirit gives you life because it makes you Righteous. And if the Spirit of God, is in you, God himself will give you life because of that. They really are all one in three. These gifts are all because of Jesus and the Spirit’s presence. What wonderful gifts we’ve been given through faith. Now and forever. Christ is everything we need. Everything is found in Him. And He has us all held together and safe, forever.
Romans 8:12-17 MSG
12-14 So don’t you see that we don’t owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. There’s nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!
15-17 This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!
Read Romans 8:18-21 NIV
I __________________ that our present _______________ are not worth ____________________ with the _________ that will be revealed in _____.
The glory that will be revealed in us? Gifts for faith.
Faith is all that really matters.
For the creation ______ in _______ ____________ for the ____________ of God to be _____________. For the creation was subjected to __________________, not by its own _________, but by the ______ of the _______ who subjected it, in _______that the _____________ itself will be _______________ from its ____________ to decay and brought into the ______________ and ________ of the ______________ of _______.
Read Romans 8:22-25 NIV
We know that the whole _____________ has been ___________ as in the pains of childbirth right up to the __________ ______. Not only so, but ____ _______________, who have the firstfruits of the _________, groan inwardly as we _______ _________ for our ___________ to __________, the ________________ of our bodies. For in this ______ we were _________. But _____ that is _______ is no _______ at all. Who ________ for _______ they _________ have? But if we ______ for _______ we do ____ yet _______, we _______ for it ______________.
Romans 8:26-28 MSG
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.
Read Romans 8:28 NIV
And we know that in ______ things God works for the good of those who _______ him, who have been ____________ according to _____ purpose.
Romans 8:29-30 MSG
God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son. The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored. We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. After God made that decision of what his children should be like, he followed it up by calling people by name. After he called them by name, he set them on a solid basis with himself. And then, after getting them established, he stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what he had begun.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things?
If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31 NIV
Read Romans 8:32-37 NIV
He who did not _________ his own Son, but _______ him ____ for us _____—how will he ______ also, along with ______, ___________ ______ us ______ things?
Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?
It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? ____ ______.
Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was __________ to ______—is at the _______ ________ of God and is also ____________________ for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall ___________ or ___________ or _______________ or ___________ or ___________ or ___________ or ________?
As it is written:
“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in _____ these things we are _________ than conquerors through ______ who loved us.
More than conquerors though Christ who loves us.
Faith benefit.
Read Romans 8:38-39 NIV
For I am ___________ that neither _________ nor _______, neither __________ nor ___________, neither the ____________ nor the _________, nor any ____________, neither _________ nor __________, nor anything else in all ______________, will be _______ to _____________ us from the _______ of ______ that is ____ Christ Jesus our Lord.
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us.
Romans 8:38 MSG
Romans 8:39 MSG
I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.
Embraced, Held On To, Totally Secure
and Loved Beyond Measure all through Faith.
John 6.
Let’s pray:
Jesus, our Lord, we bless your name. Thank You for this chapter, these verses of assurance and encouragement and how You have filled our hearts with thanksgiving in the reading. All is for your glory, all to bring you more glory. Yet the gifts here are for us, and Lord, one day, glory will be revealed in us? Oh Lord, Your Words are so full of blessing. So full, so many layers deep are Your Words. It’s such a blessing to be able to read and spend time with them. It’s so hard not to bold and underline and highlight and mark up every single sentence in this chapter. You are so good to me.
Bless each person who reads and studies with this post and guard all our hearts from anything that would distract us from the inherent blessing in these words. Give each of us the faith and encouragement to keep going and to want to continue. For all we want is more of You. Thank You, Jesus. In Your holy and precious name, I pray. Amen.
