His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (2 Peter 1:3)
Recently I was reminded of this beautiful Scripture. And encouraged in the reminder to keep working on my faith. So lets take a walk through 2 Peter 1:1b-11.
2 Peter 1:1b-11
To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
Faith is God given, but our responsibility to grow. And it’s precious. If you don’t have faith, pray. If you want more faith, study. You can exercise faith too. Does that verse, well technically it’s only part of a verse, how does it make you feel? I can’t put words to what I feel when I read that yet, but it’s a blessing, of that I am certain.
2 Peter 1:2Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Abundant Grace and Peace through the what?
Knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. This is exactly why we must study. Yet only studying won’t solve the problem. Study and exercise and work what faith you do have to grow in knowledge, the knowledge that is worth everything.
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
This is why that knowledge is worth all our time and effort to gain. He has already given us everything we need for a godly life through it, and through it we know He has called us by His own glory and goodness. Before the foundation of the world as Ephesians 1:4 says.
2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
Through His power, glory and goodness He has given us very great and precious promises… and made a way to escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. Praise His Name.
2 Peter 1:5-7 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
It’s not steps, it’s more like assembly and making us more like Jesus with every bit of progress we make.
2 Peter 1:8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The reason to keep at them, because who wants to be ineffective and unproductive in the knowledge of our Lord? Yet only in their possession can you keep from being so.
2 Peter 1:9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
See? Remember you have been cleansed.
2 Peter 1:10-11 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
What promises there! You will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome.
Do you understand why these are encouraging and confirming Scriptures? I can’t encourage you enough, keep studying, keep exercising your faith, keep reading, keep working your faith.
In His Name and for His glory. Amen.
