Hi and Happy Sunday! Welcome back to afaithtalk.com. Today we’re going to look at 2 parables in Matthew 13 just to do a bit of encouraging our faith.
First, let’s pray:
Dear Lord Jesus, these words come from stories you told. And these are unrevealed as far as explanation goes, but I think you’re going to help us understand. I ask for clarification and encouragement and the words to write today. All for your glory. Amen.
Matthew 13:31-33 NIV
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”
Three verses, that’s all and wow what they reveal. Let’s break it down and see if we can see or hear what Jesus is or was saying.
31 “The kingdom of heaven is like…”
A mustard seed.
When I was a child I had a little glass ball on a necklace that held a mustard seed. Tiny seed. I lost it so many years ago.
32 Yet when it grows… becomes a tree
I don’t know what the trees are like where you are, or even if you have trees, but where I am, as I write this, the trees are so big here that the 24 foot ladder my husband has can’t reach most of their branches. The trees tower over us here. And we’re nowhere near the redwood forest of California. Those get twice as tall as these. I hope you have the chance to spend time beneath a tree that towers over you at some point in your life.
33 Yeast mixed all through flour.
Do you know anything about making homemade bread?
None of us likely have a bowl large enough to hold this much flour.
But the point of these two very short stories isn’t what’s actually in them. They’re similes to say the kingdom, though it started very small is growing and will continue to grow every time someone welcomes Jesus into their heart.
Time will end at some point. Jesus is coming and time will end. Now is the time to give your life to Him.
Let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, I ask You, come, live in my heart. Forgive me, make me clean and new and all yours. Thank You. Amen.
Welcome to the Kingdom.
