Happy Trinity Sunday! Welcome back to afaithtalk.com, I’m so glad you’re here. Join me as we take a walk through some Scriptures to celebrate this first Sunday after Pentecost.
First though, let’s pray, because we can only really do anything when we ask for Him first. You can find it in John 15, but we cannot do anything without Him.
Faith. Faith. Faith.
Lord Jesus, thank You for joining us on this beautiful Sunday morning. I, for one, really want to understand what makes this Sunday different than any other one aside from its name. I need You to lead this; we all want You to teach us. So Lord, take my hands and these Scriptures You’ve provided and provide a lesson for us today. I trust You, Lord. In Your name I pray. Amen.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
Trinity Sunday is a very holy Sunday set in our calendar to be the Sunday after Pentecost for particular focus on our triune God.
The Father, God; The Son, Jesus; The Holy Spirit.
One of the final things Jesus said before he ascended was what we call the great commission. It’s found in Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
On Ascension Day, Jesus promised…
“For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:5.
In John 14:26, Jesus described the gift of the Holy Spirit:
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
On Pentecost…
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4
The Father sent the Son who died and saved the world, then rose again and fulfilled His promise to always be with us by sending the Holy Spirit to do within us much more than we can ask or imagine. Invite Him in. Give Him complete access. He is God too. And Jesus is so very involved when the Spirit is within You. And if you have the Holy Spirit and Jesus, You have God the Father too. The entire Godhead can indwell and empower you.
Faith. Faith.
Because we mark this Sunday as a particularly holy day, we have a published prayer to use.
This prayer is from The Book of Worship for Church and Home: With Orders of Worship, Services for the Administration of the Sacraments and Other Aids to Worship According to the Usages of the Methodist Church. Methodist Publishing House 1964.
Almighty and everlasting God, who hast revealed thyself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and dost ever live and reign in the perfect unity of love: Grant that we may always hold firmly and joyfully to this faith, and, living in praise of thy divine majesty, may finally be one in thee; who art three persons in one God, world without end. Amen.
hold firmly and joyfully to this faith
Thy divine majesty.
Just after describing the job of the Holy Spirt in John 14, Jesus said this: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Peace
While we should spend every single day of our lives worshiping God through Jesus and by the Holy Spirit, there is nothing wrong with spending a particular moment in time, like today, dreaming up audacious and tenacious prayers like the one above to glorify and worship the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. So let’s echo that one…
Almighty and everlasting God, my Papa, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and as you live and reign in the perfect unity of love and call us to unity too: grant that we may always hold firmly and joyfully to this faith.
Lord Jesus, you’ve told us as we remain in You, you remain in us and the way of love is obedience. You’ve reminded us to stand firm and alert and to expectantly await your return. We do so with Your light in our hearts.
Holy Spirit, thank You for being our comforter, our reminder, our helper, our strengthener, everything we need every moment of every day and the key that gets Jesus himself within us. You’re also the promise, the guarantee of a wonderful inheritance.
Draw us close, Lord, hold onto us and keep our faith burning bright.
There’s been a song in my heart all day long that has this line in it
Such a tiny offering,
compared to Calvary,
nevertheless, I lay it at Your feet
All for your glory, all to glorify You.
Thank You, for all of this, Lord. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
